Title: The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
Genre: Historical Fiction/Horror
Pub Date: October 31, 2023
* Multiple POV
* Reformatory for Troubled Youth
* Racial Prejudice
* Mischievous Haints
📍Set in 1950s Florida
📖 The Reformatory is about a young boy, Robert Stephens Jr, gets unfairly shipped off to a segregated Reformatory school that may *or may not* be haunted after a slight altercation with the child of the towns richest landowner.
💭 The Reformatory is a story of resilience, family, corruption and the injustice faced in 1950s Jim Crow Florida. I thought there would be more paranomal horror elements but, honestly, reading about the horrific treatment of people based on their skin color and/or financial standing is enough. It starts slow but once it picks up, you won't be able to put it down.
💭 The author did an amazing job with this thought provoking read, blending elements of paranomal with the horrors faced in real life. It's a slow burn (in terms of paranomal) but it's worth the wait!🙌
⭐️ If you enjoy historical fiction with a smidge of paranomal/superstitions, I absolutely recommend The Reformatory.
Thank you so much, Saga Press and NetGalley, for the digital review copy.
