Royal Wedding
by Meg Cabot
I was super excited when I saw that Meg Cabot was releasing a new book in the Princess Diaries series. This series got me and my best friend through our teens. We’d read them together, and fangirl over Michael on a more than regular basis. Meg Cabot’s writing style has always been clever and witty, and an absolute joy to read. Mia Thermopolis was always a brilliantly relatable character to read about. The whole series was just brilliant.
When I picked up Royal Wedding in my local library, I really thought all of these things would still stand true. However, I found that I didn’t enjoy Cabot’s writing as much this time round. The wittiness was still there, but I feel like it was overshadowed by a distinct lack of plot – or, at least, a distinct lack of an exciting plot.
The big reveal in this novel was really disappointing for me. I know that it was done with the intention of paving the path for a new YA series, but I still didn’t like it. I’m sure she could have started the series without ruining her older series for fans in the process.
I also expected Mia to still be relatable since, in this book, she’s still around the same age as me – just like she was when I read the books originally. However, I feel like Cabot wrote her as the same teenage character that she was in the original books in this series, instead of writing her as the adult she is supposed to be in Royal Wedding.
The only redeeming point for me in this novel was Michael, simply because my teenage heart will always love Michael Moszovitz.
Royal Wedding was nothing more than a big disappointment for me – which is a shame, because I really thought that diving back into a world I loved so much as a teenager would be the most wonderful experience.
