Waking Olivia
by Elizabeth O'Roark
DNF ~50% (tbd because I'm not sure if I'm going to finish this)
The reddit threads raved about this book, and I like O'Roark's other novels so I gave it a try. I have quite a few dislikes but the major one is that our MMC, Will, is a CHEATER. How can I support a CHEEAAATER???????
Ok onto the dislikes list:
- Olivia is incredibly aggressive and just a straight-up asshole for no reason. The way she treats Erin?? Disgusting. I understand making the lead a little "prickly" or giving her a "hard exterior," but this was way too much.
- Will is A CHEATER !!!! !!! ???? !!! What female romance author makes her male lead a cHEATER???? I just cannot get behind this. Why did O'Roark bother giving him a gf? Should've just kept him single from the beginning.
- the reddit threads did say this series is less fluff and more angst than O'Roark's Devils series, which I've read and liked. I didn't understand what that meant and now that I've read 50% of Waking Olivia...I understand that I do not like angst and I like fluff. God, these people have a lot of problems.
- I also am not into forbidden romance, and I am not into the teacher-student romantic relationship. The imbalance of power is just so gross to me. But I understand that is some people's cup of tea.
- I HATEEEE the way O'Roark made the two leads insanely hot. I prefer when the leads find each other hot, and I don't like when each lead has gaggles of followers drooling after of them, ex. Olivia has all of the men's football+track teams fighting over her, Will has the entire women's track team giggling over him. It cheapens the relationship. Most of the relationship between these two is built on how hot they find the other..I wish it had been more focused on an emotional connection/build-up.
Anyway, it's 2:30am so it was pretty addicting in the same way I've found O'Roark's other novels to be, and what stopped me is a scene of Will's ABHORRENT treatment of his girlfriend. Dude, just freaking dump her???!!!!? Disgusting. And the way his chapters objectify Olivia? Bro I'm all for some hot objectification but this was not hot, not hot at all. Ok writing this review has made up my mind that I will not be finishing this book
