The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji
4.0
dark emotional mysterious sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated

It took me a few chapters to get into this story, but once it got going, I could hardly put it down. And when I did put it down, I was puzzling out my theories.

I love the mystery trope of a group of people cut off from the rest of the world (in this case, on an island before cell phones) who are mysteriously killed one by one. But even as they desperately try to figure it out, there is a simultaneous investigation going on in the mainland about a past murder. It is all so cleverly tied together! I kept guessing wrong, and the final twist blew me away.

Not the most in-depth characters (there were a lot of them) but I cared enough about them to feel sad at so much young potential being killed.   Which, yeah, what did I expect, it’s a murder mystery.
