The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
4.0

I'm starting to understand the meaning of "magical realism". A well needed vacation to Cabo San Jose, Mexico provided the perfect environment to catch up on some pleasure reading.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and many times had me craving for some Indian cuisine as soon as I returned to the states. I like how there were special powers behind each spice, their mythical background, and how they influenced the lives of people (as long as the spices were not abused). I hoped for a parallel life story to evolve with Raven and his American Indian/Native American roots...to see whether there would be a synergistic partnering of the two cultural/spiritual worlds. Hmmmm, maybe it's time for me to read Gabriel Garcia Marquez who is supposedly the king of magical realism so my quest to understand this style of writing can be fulfilled.
