"and sometimes, the mask is part of us--a little, at least, just as much as we're allowed to show, just enough to wear a little piece of ourselves that's real, that we can find the joy of ourselves in."
i really, really enjoyed this one!!
i don't read a ton of historical romance that's set in the 1900s (which oof, that's historical) and so this one being set in the 20's/30's was really cool. i've never really looked into or read anything about the prohibition era and it's so crazy how heavy they were on going after bars they thought were stocking alcohol? i know it was technically illegal but damn.
either way, i loved Kasia as a POV character. she's strong and dedicated and loyal and tries so hard and is also soft and she just needs a hug!! and i wanted to just give her a hug!! i loved how willing she is to stick her neck out for people she loves and to protect her people. she's not super good at protecting herself, but it's hard 😂 watching her spiral over Sophia was just so fun. i'm also a CRAZY simp, being a lesbian myself, and just love to obsess over a woman and wow. so relatable.
and Sophia was a great love interest! i loved how her character was fleshed out too, to the extent it was, and how strong and dedicated she is as well. she's a bad bitch and she's doing her thing and we love her!!
there was a decent amount of tragedy, not to be dramatic, and honestly i think that was the time period!
ugh and the ending made me so happy. i was so proud of Kasia. that's my girl!!
everyone should check this one out!!
thank you Abigail for the arc, i'm so happy to have been able to read this one early ❤️
