His Rock Hard Rhythm by Flora Dare

Man. I'm always bummed when I start off a book and think I'm going to have a glowing review for it at the end. And then...I do not.

The first 55% of this book is great. It's pretty light. It's fun. It's a silly orc rock romp with a very insta-love connection between the mains. It's a bit eye-rolly, but it's fun and super easy to inhale.

And then.

The dreaded Nonsensical Third Act Break Up™ happens. Complete with
Spoilerthe need to insert an until-this-point unshared backstory for the sudden shift in a main character's temperament so the tantrum can happen. There was ample opportunity to organically seed this into the narrative and let it grow—every time "I DON'T DO RELATIONSHIPS ANYMORE!!!" was thought by that specific character, THAT was the time to weave it in—to build the insecurities and doubts into them.

A totally pointless Jealous Bitch Ex was thrown in for the hell of it, and causes a second Third Act Break Up on the heels of the first one—ironically, the main this character is connected to has a fully fleshed out back story of betrayal that ends up being 100% pointless to the events of the story beyond giving us a Reason to hate the ex. Had that backwards, authors.

Why y'all? Sigh. These are the bane of my reading existence.

And as is always the case after NTABUs, the coming back together of the mains happens way too fast with no work put in, no self-reflection or growth for either main, a toxic level of codependency, and it left me questioning why they would actually want to be together.

So. I'm averaging this to a 3. The beginning is really good. Solid 4 read. The last third is a 2.
