State of Fear by Michael Crichton
2.0

This is a challenging book for me to review. On the one hand, I agree with two of the author's basic points, 1) that leaders rule through fear which is often manufactured for more efficient management and 2) that the environment is not a static thing that we can just "leave alone" and all will be great - it's constantly changing and no one really knows how to manage it effectively.

But my problem with this book, however, is that it massively vilifies the environmentalists to the exclusion of all other players. Any bad guys in the industrial sector? Not here. Any bad guys in the governmental sector? Not in this book. It's all the fault of the psycho monomaniacal environmentalists who will stop at nothing to, um, screw up the planet. And that just makes what could have been a really good book into little more than a standard "evil consortium thriller" into which you can insert any bunch of bad guys.
