The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks
3.0
3,5 stars
This stated of interesting! Then got quite boring for my personal taste. Too much about game rules and journeying, and nothing at all happened. I slugged through quite a while, then it picked up the pace again, once it got to actually PLAYING the game, not just learning it - and the result of those games actually started to matter.
From then on it was quite good and fluent again. So I'd give 4 stars for the start, 2 stars for the rest of the first half, and 4again for the second half.
I hate playing games like chess, but live RPGs, so if you love complicated games like chess, you might like that slow first half a lot more than me!
Definitely worth a look, as long as you aren't looking for action packed Hollywood material, but rather an inside into different cultures and game possibilities.
