A very interesting and ambitious scifi story! I felt like it was able to do so much in under 300 pages, which was very impressive to me. With a story like this that goes backwards and forwards so much in time and is about the reader kind of having to pierce together the narrative on their own, you have to strike a really delicate balance of "drip feeding" information and I felt this story mostly succeeded at that. Certain sections did feel a little stretched out and mildly frustrating because it would just take too long for the connective tissue to show through. I also thought that the ending, while sufficient and made for a complete story, was not quite as satisfying as I might have hoped.
Even with those critiques, I really enjoyed this. The weirdness and the prose style and the focus on big picture "macro" issues told via the experiences and journeys of the characters, was just the kind of shit I liked. This actually reminded me a lot of Seth Dickinson's Exordia (and assorted Destiny lore) with the themes about universal narratives, politics, colonization, grief, and love, as well as the sliiiightly messy execution that I still nonetheless found impressive and enjoyed. Really excited to read more from this author and it's definitely a frontrunner for the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction in my eyes.
