Triton Vârisi
by Anna Banks
Of Triton somewhat redeemed the first book for me. It still wasn't literary excellence, but the action and incorporation of more Syrena lore brought the story up a notch. There was also less romantic action, which I think definitely benefited the book as whole because Emma and Galen grew to be a little less dependent on one another (just a little.)
I had more motivation to read this book because it was more action-packed. I liked the underwater plot a lot more than the above-water plot. Making Nalia and Grom central characters was also beneficial. I didn't like Toraf in this book, which was a bit of a disappointment since he was one of the only ones I liked in Of Poseidon. The only characters I actually liked were Antonis and Grom.
As I said, the lore and action were what I enjoyed most about this book. And the lack of romance. If you read my first review, I am not a fan of Emma/Galen and especially not of Galen. I have a few things that I specifically disliked.
"Rayna and I watched as the four fins--our entire world--swim away from us" (78 hardcover).
This is one of my nitpick-y things. I hate it when the girl, or boy, refers to their significant other as their entire world. Their whole world should not revolve around someone else, I believe that in books and in real life.
"He doesn't like Emma and Rachel making plans together. Not because he thinks they're being devious, but because he doesn't like feeling left out" (205). Exhibit A of why I dislike Galen. He's way too controlling.
Those were legitimate things I had issues with. I'm not sure if I'll go on to read the third book, perhaps if I come across it in the library.
