These Heathens
by Mia McKenzie
fast-paced
Considering the current state of the world, this is a super timely and well written novel that delves into women’s rights, the Black American experience, and LGBTQ themes in the setting of the south in 1960.
I loved everything about this book, I just wish we got a litttle bit more closure with the ending! I wanted to know where Doris ended up and what she ended up doing. It is only hinted at. Otherwise, I’m obsessed with her as a character and her wit/way with words! I didn’t expect to laugh so much while reading about such heavy topics, but Doris made me laugh out loud multiple times. The author did a great job of weaving in those touches of humor, while also immersing the reader in the complex experiences and emotions of the characters, and not taking away from the importance of the topics of the story.
