Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Beartown in Appalachia. This one is going to stick with me.

The popularity (and name) of this book made me hesitant to hop in, thinking I’d be disappointed after hearing nothing but wonderful things. It was worth the wait.

This is a character-driven story about a boy and the people around him growing up in the mountains of rural Virginia. It handles delicate matters such as addiction, the foster system, education, and forgotten town economics in an unpatronizing way, and is a glimpse into America that a lot of people don’t think about much at all.
