Poisoned by Jennifer Donnelly

2.0

Maybe 2.5, but I refuse to round it up.

I *think* I just read a book about a naive girl who was constantly being saved by armies of men who also scolded her about how ignorant and helpless she was?

I love the traditional, fairytale-esque way Donnelly writes, but this was a letdown. The lines between naivety and kindness were blurred completely. The heroine only did one thing herself, and it came out of nowhere. There’s some great nuggets in this and some cool symbolic aspects but overall I’m not into stories that paint kindness/compassion as stupidity. Also did I mention it was men who constantly saved the damsel in distress?

I also didn’t find Sophie all that kind...? She had a handful of nice moments that to me were like “Well yes, a generally good person does things like this” but nothing that would make her really stand out to me. She’s just kinda dumb.

Stepsister was so so good but unfortunately this one totally missed the mark, in my opinion.
