I wanted to like this book so I stuck with so much world building. I do not like fantasy novels because they are long and too much stuff. But I found the braiding of fantasy and real African American life history so beautiful I could not put this book down.
Bree finds herself in a story where you are the main character and are being told over and over that you are not the main character because you are both a woman and black. She is ultimately told to bow out to make room for a white male to take that power.
This story is deep and strong and powerful and filled with the magic of generations of being told no and what it’s like to look stolen power in the eye and say “yes I will take my place.”
This is not to say what this book says about grief and living with memory that is painful and filled with loss. 10/10. One day I will read the rest of this series.
