I am entranced by Leigh Bardugo's ability to incorporate lush detail into her stories. The Familiar is rich with religious and historical reference, and the magic comes from how these are represented in the novel.
Even if you don't reach for historical fiction, I would recommend giving The Familiar a try. I feel that it's a poignant tale, especially with the political climate we find ourselves existing. And it helps that there's a morally grey love interest that is dark and brooding.
