A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi
5.0
As soon as I started reading this, I knew I was going to love it. Lately, I've been reading a lot of books where it took me at least to the 100 page mark to really get into it and to start caring about the characters, but not this one. I loved Shiri from page 1, and reading how much the blatant hatred and bigotry she experienced every single day hurt her and made her shut herself of at such a young age was truly heartbreaking. I loved her relationship with her brother, her love for breakdancing, and reading, and music, and how strong and true to herself she was in spite of everything. I also really liked Ocean- such a genuinely good, kind, genuine person... Overall, a book that will stay with me for a while!
