Omens by Kelley Armstrong
5.0

I choose this book the minute I saw 'Kelley Armstrong' on the spine. She is such an amazing author - even if this wasn't the genre I expected. After reading, I noticed that someone in the bookstore had crossed out the 'fiction' specification above the barcode and handwritten 'fantasy' over the top; they obviously hadn't read this book.

This novel, and I'm sure the following series, holds much promise. By the end, you feel like you've had a taster and are left wanting more. A few things are revealed, but so much is left unanswered, however it seems she's decided to spend the time to really lay the foundation - and I think that was a great decision. So many plots seem to follow a checklist structure, whereas she (as always) have told a true story. Armstrong brings characters to life, not through descriptions and getting to the point but by demonstrating their personality alongside the plot. The development of her characters is seamless, and leave imprints in our memory which we can look back and reflect upon.
