This first book to the Mistborn series and to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere is a wonderful introduction to the complexities of his universe. I think his creativity and infinite imagination really shine in this first book, and his writing style certainly is both engaging and easy to follow. I liked the mystery presented here—what with how intense his magic system is as well as the possibilities he’s left open for even more expansion. His characters, too, are both relatable and lovable.
While I do feel there were moments here or there where the pacing of his story could have been tightened up a bit more, I overall felt like this was a fairly easy read in terms of engagement. I was always left wondering about something, whether it be character or plot related, and the curiosity kept me reading. There are smaller things that did distract me from my enjoyment, such as the seemingly unnecessary age-gap between Vin and Elend, but knowing that Sanderson began this series quite a long time ago, I do give benefit of the doubt that he was simply less-conscious about the implications of such a character choice.
Im excited to continue the series! Especially since my first Sanderson book was “Tress of the Emerald Sea,” which he wrote only recently, and I can tell that his writing skills have improved since this first Mistborn book! My husband raves about the rest of this trilogy all the time, so I’m looking forward to finding out what happens!
