The first half of the book moved very slowly. By the second half, it began to pick up more and was more enjoyable. Nevertheless, the end left me feeling unfulfilled.
Additionally, the book was filled with misogynistic comments, whether about Ma or Rosasharn, or just the women in general. While this is partly explained by the time period in which the book was written, it made it less enjoyable to read.
