Pretty Broken Girl by Jeana E. Mann

4.0

A woman's ex-husband becomes her new boss after her company is sold, and he's determined to make her pay for breaking his heart ten years ago.

I'm normally not very interested in second-chance romance or extended flashbacks, but both things worked really well in this story. We witness the painful reunion of Dakota and Samuel, who harbor a lot of emotions toward each other even after a decade of no contact. Their present day conflict is told in parallel with their sweet high school love story. I enjoyed the gradual reveal of the reasons Dakota left him, and the balance of messy angst mixed with a tortuous slow burn was perfect. This is actually part one of two, but stopping here because the reviews aren't stellar for book two, and it has a decent enough HFN ending if you don't mind the abrupt stop.
