This was a reread, and apparently when I first read it I loved it. On this reread I really struggled with some aspects. It's very trope heavy, there are some editing errors in the early sections of the book, and while I appreciate the journeys the main characters go on I found some of the inner monologue dialogue frustrating at times as they asked endless questions. There are moments where his writing feels clunky and exposition heavy, especially in the earlier chapters.
That said like with all Sanderson novels the plot is gripping and the magic system is interesting. This is a world that, similarly to Elantris, I want to see revisited now that Sanderson has more writing experience. I am interested by the history and backstory revealed and teased at the end of the novel. I want to see what happens to our protagonists going forward. So it's got some very enjoyable aspects, but it's a real mixed bag.
I also want to pause to note some of the more questionable tropes (17 yr old married off to an immortal, the religious character is very cruel regarding sex work and modesty and I think some of the authors own prejudices come through there, there are some questionable race dynamics particularly towards the end of the book).
