The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge
5.0

This has been one of my favourite books for ages, with a nice, rolling story and, well, it's very good comfort reading. Also there is some excellent dry humour, especially concerning Wiggins. However, there are several annoyances.

- There is far to much religious stuff for my liking

- This means that Maria is constantly admonished for being too curious. I mean, I love her as a main character, and she's one of my favourite main characters in books, but she'd be way better if she was more feminist and wasn't chastened by "vanity is of the devil, and excessive female curiosity is not to be commended either. Nip it in the bud, dear, while there's still time" Curiosity makes life way more interesting! We wouldn't have space travel or anything if someone hadn't been curious about what was out there!

- The animals are by far the coolest characters (although, that is acknowledged in the book) and most of the humans are simple and not developed enough; too one-sided (possibly with the exception of Marmaduke Scarlet. I like Marmaduke Scarlet.) All the characters get married. (again, Marmaduke is the exception).
Maria is married one year after the book! That means she'll be FIFTEEN! And also, Robin is her second cousin

Well I guess Elizabeth Goudge (author) made a good decision to set this book in 1842, about 100 years before she wrote it. Most of the bad things in the book are excused by that.

But if you ignore/put up with these grievances, it is a lovely read and good book.

Oh, and the food descriptions are wonderful.
