The Giver by Lois Lowry
2.5
dark mysterious tense

This is part of the middle/high school reads that were required but I am willingly choosing to reread because I can.

Not sure if this one totally counts because I passed all my assignments and stuff with hardly ever reading this one. Going at it now, I didn’t know a lot. That, or I forgot it.

Everyone hypes this book up, and they did back then in middle school, but I still don’t get it. I thought it would materialize more of what was really at hand, but it felt loose. This book is an easy enough read because we read it in middle school, but it has such a fantastic plot idea that could’ve been more challenging. It’s okay as a younger read, but could’ve been far better for older people had it been written that way.

The world building was there but also wasn’t? Who are the higher ups? Who is in power? Who is in charge? How are these children given to families?

It’s such a good plot idea and that’s what makes me so disappointed; it’s one that is very similar to Fahrenheit 451 with citizens having a dumbed down thought process and overall just government-run and people not knowing how to think and feel anymore.

This book had potential. It is the 1st in a series of four books total, so maybe it can improve. I don’t know. I’m moving on to another book now.

(Also, the ending was so weak. I was so bored.)
