Darkfall
by Dean Koontz
Overall, I think it was exciting. However, I hated the main character and a lot of things in this book are pretty problematic.
1. The antagonist is a man from Haiti, who is a voodoo man and does dark magic.
2. There's a conversation where Jack, our main character vehemently defends how uncorrupt the police are. Currently, we know that is not true. Also, Black Lives Matter.
3. He could not understand why a mafia boss would be upset over his dogs being murdered but not be sad about ordering other people dead. Hmm, let me think here. Maybe cause he loves his dogs and having people killed is his job??
4. The intelligence of animals is severely undermined. Multiple times he talks about how "dumb" animals are. He even goes to say that the capacity to feel love is what separates humans from animals. INCORRECT
5. Our detective main character says, "All junkies are nuts." That is SUCH a horrible view of drug addiction. How is he a police officer?? Where is the compassion?
6. He has a conversation about his daughter that a lot of "regular" people go to therapists (true) but that all the "truly crazy people get put in hospitals and institutions". What a DANGEROUS statement to say to a young person.
So much has changed since 1985, and this book is a bit of a mess in that regard. But, it still was mildly interesting and the first scene is very thrilling!
