Brothers in Arms by Lois McMaster Bujold

4.0

I found myself with a much greater sense of appreciation for Brothers in Arms the second time around, although knowing Mark and his role in the universe to come I was unbelievably shocked at where Mark began. Over the years his character had become taller, larger than life, bigger than Miles himself, so to see him where it all began was a shock to the system.

Miles Vorkosigan aka Admiral Naismith of the Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet finds himself stuck on Earth after a devastating campaign. Left chasing funds to pay off his Fleet debts, Miles finds himself stuck as escort to London socialites and struggling with the shift between his Vorkosigan and Naismith personalities.

Amongst all this, lurking in the background is our introduction to Mark, a truly bizarre twist in the storyline that is Miles.
