The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings

4.0

I was drawn back to this book while reading and learning a lot about Hawai’i in How to Hide an Empire. I think I read it for the first time in college, but it’s all a blur now. There was something special about reading it again, sort of like visiting home or remembering an old version of myself. One line in particular I’ve thought about throughout the years, but I had completely forgotten it was from this book until I came across it again, more than six years later.

It’s not the most incredible writing or story line but I like it. I liked the calmness Hemming’s style and the familiarity of the book. Something I looked forward to picking up every day of the last few days, which was a gift in itself to have something to look forward to among the mundanity of ongoing COVID quarantine/lockdown.

Also, George Clooney was born to play the lead role in the movie version.
