Sabriel by Garth Nix
4.75

A super fun read! I loved the world, magic system, and Nix's writing style. Much of the dialogue made me laugh out loud due to the wry humor.
The love subplot was very forced and sudden. I think the mutual bowing scene would have been much more interesting if it felt more like a knight pledging fealty/obeying a king's orders out of a more pure sense of loyalty or belief. The whole "I love you," "I think I love you too" scene was so silly and not earned.
That being said, it did not ruin the read for me at all, but it is what kept this from being a 5 star book for me.

I am not sure if I will continue with this series as the second and third are not about Sabriel (or
Mogget
), but I intend to read more Garth Nix!

Would fully recommend if someone is looking for a quick, engaging book with a unique magic system that's interwoven well within a historical context. If you like Howl's Moving Castle (movie or book), I think this would be a worthwhile read. Stands up quite well to the rest of time.
