While the sequel didn’t quite sparkle for me as much as the first book did, there’s still plenty to enjoy. The first book really caught my attention with its unique blend of a ‘Bachelorette’ vibe mixed with the thrill of ‘The Hunger Games’, a combo this follow-up seemed to miss. I was also really looking forward to diving deeper into the protagonist’s mysterious background, hinted at in the first book. However, the exploration into her world didn’t quite hit the mark for me. A lot of the story revolved around being captured and confined, which felt a bit too repetitive and took away from the excitement. It almost felt like the ending had to hurry up because so much time was spent on the capture scenes.

And then there’s the part about her friend’s point of view. To be honest, it felt a bit out of place. Just as I was getting pulled back into the story, her perspective would pop up, and it kind of interrupted the flow for me.

But hey, all that said, I still think it’s a pretty good book. When I picked up the first book, all I wanted was a cool story about Fae, and the author definitely delivers on that front across both books. I’ve definitely read books that didn’t hit the mark as much as this one, and I’m keen to see what else the author has in store. There’s something about the way they build their world that keeps me coming back for more.
