The House of My Mother by Shari Franke

challenging dark emotional hopeful informative inspiring reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

This book was a heavy read. Shari’s writing is so powerful and compelling that I finished it in just two days. I often found myself needing to pause—usually when my eyes filled with tears and I couldn't see the words clearly. At one point, I even had to go get a hug before I could continue.
Shari’s vulnerability, honesty, and resilience are beautifully intertwined throughout the book, all while being incredibly respectful and mindful of her siblings' privacy. She takes a deep dive into her life, from being a child prior to her internet stardom, to revealing the reality behind the scenes of the “perfect happy Mormon family” they presented themselves as to the world. She also details the mind-boggling perfect storm of events that led to the ultimate (and viral) downfall of Ruby, along with some of the aftermath.
Shari also courageously shares the other heart-wrenching battles she faced during that chaotic time. Her story isn't just a memoir; it's a powerful call to action for laws to protect children like her. I appreciate and admire her desire for change and her willingness to share her story and fight to facilitate that.
