The Iron Trial
by Holly Black, Cassandra Clare
A lot of complaints about this book are all the similarities to Harry Potter. Let's be real here, guys. Just about every magic book from now until we're all dead is going to mirror Harry Potter in some way. That's just the way it is, because when you're the first and the best? People are going to emulate you.
I liked this book, a lot. Because I am a Harry Potter fan, and these sort of magical worlds tend to suck me in. Did I see the glaringly obvious similarities? Of course I did. Do I like Aaron a hell of a lot more than I ever liked Ron Weasley? Without doubt (hey, I have an opinion and that opinion is that Ron sucked). I like Tamara too, and I really like Call. I like that he has a disability that hinders him, and I like that he's scared and longs to be with his father while also wanting to seek out his magical ability.
I'm curious to see what happens in the next book, and if it diverts away from the Harry Potter undertones. I'm willing to keep going, that's for sure, and this book was fun. Fun enough that I read it in just a few hours and that it kept me entertained. That's what matters most to me.
