I wanted to really enjoy this book, but it was really hard. Because I loved the initial idea of it. Meaning that it was kinda like a ‘Practical Magic’ type of story, but with women from the South of the US and involving hoodoo and voodoo practices.

But, where it failed a little bit for me was in the delivery of the story. I did liked that it focused more on the relationships of the characters rather than the magic— because these are closed practices—but many of them were a bit boring and hard to understand. I also hated the constant miscommunication that they all had. It frustrated me to no end.

Yet overall, it is a beautiful story about how, women—specifically, black women, and women of color— block ourselves from true happiness, because of the actions of others, and how we take those actions as our own to justify our decisions.
