Whatever your gender, whatever your denomination, you should read this book.
Dr. Barr's book is essentially her journey as a historian through the history of the Christian church, but she wrote the women back into the narrative. I hold a degree from a private Bible college and I even studying abroad at Oxford, and the majority of this book was new information for me.
Reading the book did not feel like I was reading a history book. It felt as if Dr. Barr was putting together a puzzle that I had been working on for a long time. All the uneasiness and challenges I experienced within the American evangelical church make so much more sense now. Finally, I feel equipped with the bigger picture. Sexism and the subjugation of women is not divinely inspired, it is culturally inspired. Dr. Barr takes us along on the journey of how she learned the history of how the subjugation of women became gospel truth.
