Dark Blue Rising by Teri Terry
4.0

This book singlehandedly pulled me out of a month-long reading slump and got me hooked after only a few chapters. It had a great protagonist in a character-driven story, which tackles very different topics from abusive parenting to climate change and toxic sports culture.

In the beginning we meet Tabby in a very YA scenario. Living alone with her mother, always traveling around and a strange closeness to the ocean. But the story quickly made a turn when it was revealed, that the woman who Tabby thought was her mom, Cate, had actually kidnapped her from her real parents, and so it soon turned into "Tangled" if it had been a Thriller about emotional abuse and how to brainwash your child. It was incredibly emotional to watch Tabby go through that drastic change in her life and slowly coming to terms with everything that had happend to her. But just as soon I got used to that direction of the plot, the author started hinting at supernatural elements, kept exploring the "surpass your limits" mentality of sports and somehow turned the entire set up into a giant conspiracy?

Needless to say, a lot happend. But despite all those different elements, the story was still cohesive, well-paced and captivating. Cannot wait to read the next!
