Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
5.0
Read this book because it was promoted by my local indie book store.
Wow. This was a wonderful book. I didn't really have an idea of the plot before I started and I'm glad. The story was easy to follow and immerse myself in even with multiple POVs and some slight timeline jumping.
In the 'acknowledgments' section, Roanhorse discusses how she set out to write an epic fantasy that was not Euro-centric and she succeeded. The influence of early cultures from the Americas is present but approachable.
I appreciated the variety and inclusiveness of the characters. I would say this book borders on having TOO many characters, but if this is the beginning of a fantasy series, it might be much-needed set up.
I would say this book could have been longer, but that's just me wishing there was more to this series already!
I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to start a light fantasy series. If you want likeable characters, good world building and a non-Euro-centric culture, this is for you!
