The Fall Up
by Aly Martinez
I wanted to jump.
He made me fall.
As a celebrity, I lived in the public eye, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost myself in the spotlight.
Until he found me.
Sam Rivers was a gorgeous, tattooed stranger who saved my life with nothing more than a simple conversation.
But we were both standing on that bridge for a reason the night we met. The secrets of our pasts brought us together—and then tore us apart.
Could we find a reason to hold on as life constantly pulled us down?
Or maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall in love at rock bottom—up.

Quick Reasons: a cute, fluffy read that also deals with some heavy-handed, emotional situations; realistic relationships and characters—flaws and all; heart-wrenching scenes; a quick, easy read; a hint of mystery; well-written, sensitive handling of serious real-life struggles
Guys. I started this read not even four hours ago. I DEVOURED this book—and for good reason. I just could not put it down once I got it started! If I had been in a book slump before starting this read, it would have ended after page one—so if you're struggling to find a book to lose yourself in, maybe you should consider this one. Just saying.
I'm not even sure I can coherently put my thoughts into words after this read, but I'm going to do my best. Bear with me, will you? This might get a bit ugly.
I wasn't expecting the story I got when I stepped into this book. To be totally honest, I'm not even sure what I was expecting—I stumbled across this on amazon, fell immediately in love with the cover, and didn't really even slow down long enough to read the blurb. Gut instinct was: I HAD to read it. I didn't care what it was about, I didn't care what genre. I just needed.
So when I realized, a few chapters in, that this was another new adult book to notch off on my belt...I was surprised. And I was thrilled. And by chapter four, I was so invested in the characters and their stories that I wouldn't have cared either way regardless. Because these characters literally LEAP to life from the page. The dual-perspective was beautiful and effective for this read: it allowed for a bit of mystery at the beginning, while still driving home the over-arcing moral of this story.
Aly Martinez did a beautiful job writing this and making it count. This story isn't all butterflies and love-blossoms; there are some deep-reaching, emotionally heavy, possibly triggering situations (so if you're triggered by suicide/suicide attempts, you might want to steer clear). But these painful scenes are done with a gorgeous, sensitive hand—and done in a way that is bound to touch readers.
The characters are intriguing, entertaining, and (because we all know how much I love it!) snarky. They unfold from the pages like origami, revealing their personalities, their flaws, their secrets in bits and pieces as the pages fly by. Each revelation is a gasp of air, a grasping of straws—I found myself unable to set this book aside, needing to know what happened next, needing to know these characters made it through unscathed. The romance is whirlwind and crazy...and yet somehow exactly right for this read. There were several (embarrassing) moments I found myself giggling like a loon, the husband glancing at me in confusion.
This is a heart-happy, fluffy read that still manages to examine and discuss heavier emotional situations—and the effects such things have on everyone, not just those effected. I'd definitely recommend to lovers of new adult, contemporary, sexy reads—though young readers, and those triggered by suicidal tendencies, probably should steer clear unless absolutely sure they can handle it. Now, if you don't mind, I think I need to go find book two in the series...I need more slap-happy stories in my life!

“I fell in love with you when I was at rock bottom. But I’ll never be able to look back on those dark days with anything but a smile. I wanted to jump, Sam, but I never once expected the fall to go up.”

“There isn’t a woman in the world who doesn’t have demons of some sort. No matter who I end up with, it’s always going to be a struggle.” I kissed her hair again, letting it linger as if my lips were able to transfer the truth of my words. “Levee, I’d like to struggle with you.”

“Henry stilled and peeled his shirt over his head, announcing, “Threesome.”
“Excuse me?” Sam questioned as Henry advanced.
“Fine, twosome, but Levee gets to watch. She is my best friend, after all.”
