For the Love of Physics: From the End of the Rainbow to the Edge of Time - A Journey Through the Wonders of Physics by Walter Lewin

5.0

I don’t remember the last time I ever wrote a review for a book. However this book was different. It compelled me to write. The book I am talking about is “For the love of Physics”. Now I assume that most of you are planning to terminate reading any further because the title has the name Physics and the world knows it not every of us is fond of this subject. However this book is a strong message against any such hatred or unlikeness. People seem to dodge Physics with a unique reason of their own. I personally believe that it is mainly because of the common belief that Mathematics is the language of Physics.
This book however, explains the physics in its most elegant form without using the dreadful equations. Actually without using any equation at all. I find Physics everywhere. From the running of my favourite train to the working of water pumps to the formation of rainbows to merely me walking to the lecture hall. Physics is everywhere.
If you are already a Physics lover who understands Physics not just as what it is but also with all the Mathematical approaches, this book will provide you with a “qualitative” insight. ‘Physics is not about cramming and applying formulae’. Even of you match the description of an ideal Physicist, you can always take out a few moments from your daily schedule and simply test your knowledge. For those of you who never liked Physics or who have never been introduced to this world; trust me when I say this: you will never look at the world the way you do now after reading this book. You will no longer watch movies during your long flights but fight for the window seat in order to observe some spectacular nature’s phenomenon which we miss because we don’t know where and why to look at. You will never let a whistling train engine past by you without stopping and thinking what just really happened. You will never look at the night sky without acknowledging the wonderful bodies up there. You will never dodge a question that starts with “Why”. Believe me folks, you will never ever be able to sleep without thinking of physics. This book has the potential to give you some sleepless nights and at the end, you will take out some time and appreciate the wonderful enigma of Physics around you.
In short this book is an awesome approach made by Professor Water Lewin to bridge the gap between the physicists and the general public. Something about Prof. Lewin; whenever he taught “the conservation of energy” principle, he put his life at risk just to demonstrate the unbreakable principle of energy conservation. And guys! He is still alive because Physics works. J

P.S. Don’t get me wrong. Maths is definitely required if you want to go in detail study of this wonderful (and at times counter intuitive subject). However you can easily understand the basic phenomenon without much of the Mathematical equations involved. I hate Maths as much as I love Physics. However if Newton can develop an entire field of Maths called Calculus to derive and illustrate the basic laws of motion, we can at least learn small bits of Mathematics involved with the deep study in Physics.
