I've followed a lot of discourse about this series, especially since the anime came out, and especially as someone who didn't enjoy it the first time around. One comment that has really stuck with me is that it's not us, the readers, who are supposed to fall and approve of Itsuomi, but Yuki. It is her choice who she allows to get close to her and the liberties they can take in light of her condition. Going into the story with that perspective has allowed me to view their relationship from more of a distance, and trying to understand the signals Yuki is giving off and how Itsuomi responds to those signals. Taking myself, who would never in a million years like someone with a personality like Itsuomi's, out of the equation and appreciating it simply as a love story happening to distant people from afar does help with enjoying this series. So, I'm hopeful I'll get a bit further in the story this time and appreciate more of what everyone seems to love about it.
