This was honestly a really sweet and tender book. I found I really REALLY didn't like the character of Jake, even when he sometimes had good moments, but I feel like that was the intention of the book. It did a good job of making me root for Arthur. I could pretty much predict Jake's actions too, that's how vivid the picture was without spelling things out for you.

The connections between the two time periods were done really well. For a book with long chapters they didn't feel long. Reading it flowed really well in my mind. I also have to appreciate the fact that for a historical novel there was never any dread at the back of my mind that eventually we were leading up to some type of sexual violence. Lawson knew how to make scenes poignant without going the grotesque route.

This is the first novel of hers that I've ever read and it makes me want to read her other stuff.
