“Pocket is brave. He has been through a lot. But he is still kind. He is a hero. Not a big, important hero. But there are many kinds of heroes.”

i’m not sure i’ve cried more over a book recently than i have with this one of stuffed (but not very huggable) bears and a cat with an urge to steal.

Pocket Bear tells the stories of Pocket and Berwon, two historically significant stuffed bears, and Zephyrina, a cat struggling with loving and feeling loved. having been through years of war and abandonment, Pocket and, more recently, Berwon are brought to refugee Dasha’s Second Chances home to be rehabilitated and rehomed.

this little found family story features themes of war, and how it affects families, with a historical touch to it as both of our bears come from opposite sides of WWI.

with gorgeous illustrations and such beautiful language on the impact our stuffed friends can have on us, this book will have kids researching the mascot bear and more significant stuffed animals in world history, while also appreciating their own stuffed friends that much more.
