Devoted by Dean Koontz

5.0

It usually only takes me about a day to finish a Koontz story, but in all honesty... I was so hesitant for this one to end. I drink these books in like a dying man would drink water in the desert and it's so hard sometimes for the story to end. It is hard for me to pick a favorite Koontz, but I've always held to "Watchers" as being my top favorite. I think that "Devoted" has now taken that top spot, and for so many wonderful reasons. Like all of his stories, there is a darkness and an evil that must be stopped, must be fought against. But more importantly, there is good. Good in people, good in dogs, and hope; always hope. I loved SO many of the characters, even if they were just in the story for a short period of time, but Woody, the autistic boy, he completely stole my heart. So much is a mystery when it comes to autism, and I'm sure each child is different, but I know how smart and how special they are, especially to those who love them and care for them. Koontz always creates strong and yet lovable female characters, and the mother of Woody, Megan, was no exception to that. Kipp, the dog, is of course an absolute heart-stealer for all the usual reasons that dogs are, but also for many more mysterious and wonderful reasons than can be summed up in a review. I look forward to reading this many, many times over and over in my life, especially when the days seem darkest and I need a little bit of hope to brighten my world.
