This is a very evocative gothic tale. I felt at first it was an adult version of A Series of Unlikely Events. An orphan who is passed around guardians after each passes away. But the paranormal twist is the FLC can see Death.  Her latest guardian is a widower with a ill daughter, who is still grieving his wife's passing by drinking and partying to excess. Signa discovers that his late wife was murdered and that his daughter is being poisoned.
The murder mystery kept me on my toes, and I hadn't figured out the killer until near the end.
I enjoyed the atmosphere and the writing.
