This is a pulp novel to me. I read the first half in one afternoon in one sitting, it gripped me completely and was so much fun to read. The second half, not so much. Once it became clear that this was the authors chronic illness power fantasy, I checked out a bit. I got to the point where Violet got to be the Specialist Girl In The World with two dragons and it made all the interesting death defying stakes go away. It became clear that the rules of the world would bend to accommodate her, in direct opposition to how the first half emphasizes training, skill, and life threatening danger at every turn. Rather than her changing the system by power of her own, the system gets bent to service her. There are no longer stakes or real danger. Something will always save Violet, and it will most likely not be her own skill.

The romance was interesting and engaging! The sex scene where they destroy the room was comical.
It was a fun read for sure, but I can’t say it was a well written one. It’s a pulp novel! We aren’t here for the prose or to think very hard, we are here for cool dragons and conspiracies and fights and sex. And I think that’s okay.
