The Winter King by C.L. Wilson
4.0

4.5/5
I fear I might have stumbled upon the truest form of PEAK within romantasy and there is no way I am EVER going back. I know you might be looking at the cover and going "...really?" YES. Yes really. Listen to me comrades, this is it. If you know me, you know I don't get this gaga over books that are purely romance and rarely read them. But I have seen the light and that is C. L. Wilson's amazing storytelling and well developed characters.

Khamsin Coruscate, Princess of Summerlea and summoner of storms, has been given a simple decision: enter into a marriage with Wynter the icy king of Wintercraig or face death. Her father has always mistreated her, blaming her for her mother's death, so she see's this as his final attempt at getting rid of her for good. But what was supposed to be a punishment is instead giving her the first taste of freedom. Wynter is the first person to see her for who she truly is, uncontrollable storms and all, and while she has his affections it's not long till she desires his genuine love and trust.

Wynter is running out of time. Each day his Ice Heart grows more and more powerful and he needs an heir. Now. Khamsin was not what he expected when he was promised a Summerlea princess and wary eyes around them wonder if she has put him under a spell. Only she can keep his Ice Heart at bay and it won't be long till she's bearing his heirs. But can he trust her?

Move over shadow daddies because we need more weather mages. Wynter won People's Choice Awards for Sexiest Man Alive 10 years in a row. He's got a raging Ice Heart (and something else that will give you frost bite) and large powerful hands that will beat anyone who looks at his WIFE wrong. "Where's my wife?!" are the only words a man needs to utter. My lesbian heart beats for him and I have fallen to my hands and knees.

Khamsin is what makes this book. She is an actual storm that will come blazing in and rip your storm shelters apart and say "oops". I absolutely adore awkward characters who can't control their emotions and are a testament to "I care deeply about you and I'm going to show it". It was so refreshing to have a character like that where you witness the deconstruction of what she was taught as a child and you see her character growth slowly happen through these pages.

The plot kept me hooked and at almost 600 pages I never got bored and had to physically force myself to stop reading so I could sleep. Every character here is vital and you are shown rather than told how each one is so complex with their mistrust for Khamsin. I will say the drama here is wild and I felt like I was reading an arranged marriage webtoon with the revelations happening. I'm so happy I had a group chat with some ladies who I buddy read with because we were blowing it up either being horny for Wynter or saying "what the fuck is happening!!"

For my rating I do give it a 4.5 while it was almost perfect for me sometimes the miscommunication would drive me wacko. But they somehow always solved it before it irked me but then C.L Wilson would throw in another one and I was like GIRL. Let's work it out on the remix. Otherwise would read again 10/10.
