Scythe by Neal Shusterman

5.0

I absolutely love the world building in this book! It’s a world where death and sickness has been overcome and the only way to stay dead is to be killed by these human’s called ‘Sythes’ and they do their job fairly to keep the human population under control. The story follows two teens who are taken as Sythe apprentices, training to become junior Sythes.

I found it so hard to stop reading, each chapter made me want to read what happened next. At the start I was against the whole ‘gleaming’ aka killing thing but slowly I began to feel what the characters felt and believe what they did and I can totally see why it’s carried out. I love when you feel you’re following a character’s journey, the writing was fantastic.

The two main protagonists were ones to root for and I always understood what they did no matter how twisted and morally wrong it could be. I really sympathised with characters I didn’t think I would and overall I just loved everything about the book. Can’t wait to re read one day!!

‘Rowan wondered if a world without death would then make everyone strangers’
