tanyarobinson 's review for:
The Fireman
by Joe Hill
This book sounded really cool, and for the first 200 pages it was. Then I remembered that I hate science fiction, and that most dystopian plots only work for me for so long. The idea of the "Dragonscale" spore infecting the population grabbed me; I've always been interested in infectious disease and Doomsday scenarios.
I didn't love any of the characters, particularly since many of them had pretty vulgar language (and that automatically distances me from them). And I didn't like the author's obvious axe to burn with religion and spirituality.
I kept going through all 750 pages, hoping that the ending would redeem the dragging middle section, but it really didn't. I could have done without the whole book.
Barely 3 stars.
