Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield

sad tense slow-paced

5.0

I loved this so much, I went out and bought a signed hardback before I'd finished reading it.

This was so sad and beautiful. It put me in such a melancholy, with feelings I've never actually had myself. Even with all the weirdness, Miri and Leah seemed so real. The unsettling aftereffects of Leah's voyage mixed with the mundanities of their relationship were perfectly woven together in the writing.

The flashback scenes made me nostalgic for people I've never known. And the split structure let both the doomed expedition and its aftermath unfold at a gentle pace.

Truly exquisite. I'm very excited to read 'salt slow' (which I also bought the other day), and whatever Armfield does next.
