Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

5.0

I got this book as an ARC through NetGalley. Its a website where you can get digital copies of new releases or books that haven't came out yet. Now you do have to request these books. Sometimes they will approve and other times they wont. I have gotten a few major highly anticipated releases through this site~
Title: Spin the Dawn
Author: Elizabeth Lim
Series: The Blood of Stars
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, romance
Publication Date: July 9, 2019
Goodreads Summary: Project Runway meets Mulan

I was highly anticipating this book because it looked like the young adult fantasy of the year. I heard about this book from Book Box Sherlocks. This a group on Facebook that guess the book for each subscription box that's out there. This book I think only came in the Owlcrate Subscription Box. I missed out on this box. I was able to get the enamel pin and the mug that came in the box. Which were really the only items that I wanted besides the book. I guess I could always get t he regular unsigned book because the Owlcrate cover only changed the letters from silver to gold, I believe.
I have an iPhone so I was able to hit Siri and say "Speak Screen" and it would read the book in my kindle app like an audiobook. Which I thought was a neat feature and also I never knew about it.  When I heard it was being sold as project runway meets Mulan I was interested. This book follows a girl in a similar situation like Mulan. Her mother has died and she also lost 2 out of 3 brothers to the 5 Winters War. Similar to Mulan she has to dress up like a boy and go off to the Emperor's Palace to sew in a completion to compete to be the Royal Tailor.
Here she meets a Enchanter who is bent on driving her crazy. He  helps her along the way with some advice. Her fellow competitors are cut throat and some will try to destroy her.

There were few things that I didn't like. Like how the only interest was an ass baker and thought he deserved her but in the end she has a new life and someone else away from him.  I thought the book should have ended when she won the competition and book two should have been her journey when she went to sew the sun and moon. It just felt like it should have ended at that point. All in all, I was glad that I got more to read though.
