Shuri: The Search for Black Panther by Nnedi Okorafor

3.0

2.5 Stars

I won't lie, the gorgeous cover art drew me in. (But really, this is a comic--I expect little judgement there.) And of course, I was looking forward to a chance to have an adventure with my favorite warrior princess.

The good? Lots for cameo appearances from beloved characters like Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Storm and Iron Man. (And I must say, Okorafor did a splendid job of capturing each of their characterizations.)

On the downside... this really only felt like half of a story, with a bit of cliffhanging that didn't entice me to read onward. Yes, T'chala is missing... but we have no idea why. And all the attempts at figuring this out seemed to only lead to side quests and lots of politics.

Meanwhile, Shuri keeps putting off literally EVERYONE who wants her to temporarily take up the Black Panther mantel. For unexplained reasons. (Yes, she is hesitant to let it seem like she's giving up on her brother. But surely the greater good should overrule here.)

The pacing felt really bogged down for the last half of this installment, tempting me to skim at times just to find plot progression. And we never get any feel for Shuri's evident relationship with Manifold--which didn't bode well for the emotional connectivity.
