New Boy: William Shakespeare's Othello Retold: A Novel
by Tracy Chevalier
As an English major, the Hogarth Shakespeare project, in which highly acclaimed authors retell Shakespeare’s works in new ways, is intriguing and enticing. Shakespeare’s themes are so universal that they hold true even hundreds of years later (much like those of another of my favorite writers, Jane Austen). This is my second venture into the project (after Hag-Seed, Margaret Atwood’s retelling of The Tempest), and I’ll definitely go back for more. I can only hope the other authors do as well as Tracy Chevalier does with Othello. [Disclosure: I received a free copy of New Boy through Goodreads, but that has not impacted my review.]
